Benjamin Walden Calloway is an engineer, inventor, author, chess player, dog owner, homeowner, amateur entomologist, amateur disc golfer, amateur bartender, amateur Viennese waltz practitioner, and is currently single O_o. He was born and raised in northern Kentucky but currently resides in our great city of Lexington.

Early Life

Born and raised to adolescence in Covington, Kentucky, Calloway spent much of his time outside of school with the local hoodlums. But in 2013, he and his father moved to Independence, Kentucky for reasons that have not yet been released to the public. He graduated from Simon Kenton High School in 2018.

Career

2018–2022

In the fall of 2018, he began attending the University of Kentucky (UK) to pursue mechanical engineering. At UK, he was involved with academic research in the Institute of Sustainable Manufacturing. In his third year, he practiced computer-aided design (CAD) and design engineering in an internship with Ohio-based lighting company Energy Focus, Inc. In the second half of his fourth and final year, he obtained a full-time position with NASA SBIR-funded startup company AT-TEK, LLC designing sensor systems for flange gap monitoring.

At AT-TEK, Calloway primarily designed, manufactured, tested, and marketed sensors and auxiliary systems for monitoring the flange gap in bolted pipe joints. He also designed digital models and built prototypes for structural health monitoring sensors intended to be used in the structural restraint layer of spaceborne inflatable softgoods systems. However, AT-TEK was neither able to commercialize their production-ready sensors nor secure more SBIR funding, so the company had to liquidated in 2023.

2023–Present

After leaving AT-TEK, Calloway decided to pursue his passion of inventing mechanical products and systems. He is pursuing the licensing route, where he hopes to reach a wide commercial audience through established manufacturers and retailers. He specializes in the design of hand tools, with several patents pending for products in the tool and hardware industry. Following his passion for writing, Calloway has written an educational mechanical engineering handbook and speaks publicly about the topics of engineering, problem-solving processes, and education.

A Guide to Mechanical Engineering

Calloway authored A Guide to Mechanical Engineering: Concepts, College, and Careers, a handbook designed to provide secondary schoolchildren a complete introductory education about the concepts, skills, and careers in the mechanical engineering field. It has garnered interest with central and northern Kentucky high schools, but the book is intended to make a significant impact worldwide. Calloway has expressed interest in authoring future books on the topics of engineering, problem solving, and education.
